Disrupt 2026 is expanding its AI coverage this year with a new stage built specifically for technology that makes its way into the physical world. The event, scheduled for October 13-15 at San Francisco's Moscone West, will include two separate AI-focused tracks: the returning AI Stage and the newly announced Real World AI Stage.

The Real World AI Stage is designed to explore what happens when AI moves beyond software dashboards and into vehicles, public spaces, factories, homes, and defense systems. Organizers say the stage will also examine the possibility of bringing extinct species back to life, a mission that has drawn significant attention in the AI and biology communities.

Why Disrupt 2026 now has two AI stages

Past Disrupt events have treated AI as a single, distinct theme. According to event organizers, this year's AI landscape is too broad and changing too quickly for one track to cover all of it. The new Real World AI Stage will focus on the intersection of digital intelligence and physical autonomy, while the AI Stage will continue to address software and enterprise AI issues.

One core idea underpinning the new stage is that autonomous hardware is maturing beyond autonomous vehicles. The same AI capabilities that power AI chatbots and coding assistants are now appearing in industrial robots, delivery systems, defense platforms, and scientific research tools. The result is a wave of products that must handle unpredictable physical environments as well as data-driven tasks.

The conversation will touch on critical questions about data collection, synthetic environments, and whether current robot learning paradigms can scale to the complexity of everyday human spaces.

Building AI systems when failure is not an option

When AI enters physical infrastructure, engineering failures have consequences beyond software bugs. A grounded aircraft, a crashed vehicle, or a compromised defense mission can cast doubt on the entire field of AI deployment. The Real World AI Stage will feature a session dedicated to companies building AI systems where failure is not an option.

Nate Michael, CTO of Shield AI, is confirmed for this session. The discussion will focus on how founders can create a safety culture, methodically test and validate autonomous systems, navigate regulatory approval, and build public trust when stakes are high. Organizers say the session will be relevant to anyone working with industrial AI, defense startups, or autonomous vehicles, where a system can only be called ready after it meets strict reliability standards.

For early-stage founders, this means creating engineering protocols that treat safety as a feature rather than an afterthought. For more mature companies, the challenge is often balancing continuous innovation with reliable performance in environments that cannot be fully controlled.

Can we engineer nature's comeback?

One of the most anticipated conversations on the Real World AI Stage will be a fireside chat with Ben Lamm, CEO and founder of Colossal Biosciences. The company has attracted controversy and billions of dollars in valuation by attempting to revive species that have disappeared forever.

Lamm will discuss the technologies his team uses for de-extinction work, the role AI plays in modern biology, and whether genetic engineering belongs in conservation. The session is expected to cover the ethical debate around de-extinction, including arguments that the effort could be a conservation breakthrough or a distraction from protecting species that still live today.

The conversation will also explore how AI-assisted genomics, protein engineering, and reproductive technologies are converging with data science to push the boundaries of biology.

Operating at the edge: AI when the cloud doesn't work

Many of the most useful AI deployments happen where reliable cloud connectivity is unavailable. Maritime vessels, remote industrial sites, space missions, and tactical defense operations require AI models that can run at the edge with minimal latency and no internet dependency.

The Real World AI Stage includes a session titled Operating at the Edge: How AI Works When the Cloud Doesn’t. Confirmed speakers include Dr. Ali Agha, CEO and founder of FieldAI; Michelle Lee, CEO and founder of Medra; and Aidan Madigan-Curtis, partner at Eclipse Ventures. Each speaker brings a different perspective on delivering AI systems in constrained environments, and they will share architectural principles for systems that work in the field rather than in a data center.

Key themes include model compression, power constraints, rugged hardware, and the trade-off between intelligence and autonomy when a system cannot ask a central server for a response.

From prototype to production: can it scale in reality?

A further session will examine the gap between a working prototype and a product that can be manufactured at scale. Many deep-tech companies fail not because the technology is flawed but because the transition from lab conditions to real supply chains is too difficult.

Speakers in this session include John Mackey, CEO of MBRYONICS; Boris Sofman, co-founder and CEO of Bedrock Robotics; and Adrian Macneil, CEO of Foxglove. They will discuss the mistakes they made, the steps they wish they had taken earlier, and what it means to scale physical products profitably.

The panel will cover supply chain management, quality assurance, manufacturing partnerships, and the engineering culture shifts needed when a startup moves from building one perfect unit to producing thousands of units reliably.

Beyond the Real World AI Stage, the Disrupt 2026 conference will include several other tracks with distinct focuses. The event is expected to draw startup founders, engineers, investors, and technology executives from around the world.
