These Electric Range Brands Scored The Highest Self-Cleaning Score According To Consumer Reports

Cleaning an oven is one of those household tasks that many people put off for as long as possible. Unlike vacuuming or dusting, which can be worked into a weekly routine, oven cleaning often requires dedicated time, patience, and a fair amount of physical effort. It becomes even more frustrating when the oven is part of a built-in electric range, forcing homeowners to kneel, reach into a tight cavity, and scrub away baked-on grease and carbonized food debris.

Self-cleaning electric ranges are designed to take much of that manual labor out of the equation. With the press of a button, these appliances can run a high-heat cycle or a steam-assisted cycle that loosens residue so it can be wiped away. The convenience is undeniable, but not every self-cleaning electric range performs equally well. Independent product testers have evaluated dozens of electric ranges from many different companies across a range of tasks, including baking, broiling, and self-cleaning. In those tests, three brands stood out for consistently delivering excellent self-cleaning scores: Frigidaire, LG, and Samsung.

This article breaks down those brands, the models that performed best, and the self-cleaning features that helped them rise above the competition.

Why Self-Cleaning Performance Varies So Much

Self-cleaning ovens generally fall into two broad categories: pyrolytic self-cleaning and steam cleaning. Pyrolytic systems use extremely high temperatures, often around 800 to 900 degrees Fahrenheit, to burn food residue into a fine ash. Once the cycle finishes and the oven cools, the owner simply wipes out the ash with a damp cloth. Steam-cleaning systems use water and lower heat to soften spills, making them faster but less aggressive on heavy buildup.

Some ranges offer both methods. Others provide only one. The difference in performance comes down to how effectively each system handles different types of soil, how easy the oven is to prepare, and how well the range manages heat, ventilation, and cooling. A quick steam cycle might be convenient for light messes, but it may not tackle months of baked-on grease. A long pyrolytic cycle can handle heavy soil, but it may produce odors and require more planning.

Testers evaluate these factors by applying controlled food soils to oven interiors, running the self-cleaning cycles, and measuring how much residue remains. They also consider cycle time, ease of use, and whether the range requires scraping, spraying, or other manual prep. The highest-scoring models tend to combine effective cleaning with practical features that make the process less unpleasant.

Among the many electric ranges tested, Frigidaire, LG, and Samsung each earned multiple top scores for self-cleaning. Their approaches differ, but all three brands have proven that they can build ovens that clean themselves well.

Frigidaire

Frigidaire has been part of American kitchens for more than a century. The company introduced the first self-contained electric refrigerator to the market and has remained a familiar name in kitchen appliances ever since. Although it is now owned by the Swedish manufacturer Electrolux, Frigidaire still carries a strong reputation for refrigerators, ranges, and other household products.

Its electric ranges have been especially impressive in independent testing. Frigidaire produces three top-rated 30-inch smoothtop single-oven electric ranges, as well as three top-rated electric induction ranges. That kind of dominance across multiple categories shows that the brand is not relying on a single standout model.

When it comes to self-cleaning, Frigidaire ovens generally perform very well. Four separate Frigidaire electric range models, including one discontinued model, earned the highest possible marks in self-cleaning tests. That gives Frigidaire the second-highest number of top-scoring models among all brands evaluated.

Frigidaire Gallery GCFE3060BF

One of the most notable Frigidaire ranges is the 30-inch Frigidaire Gallery GCFE3060BF. This model is the overall top-rated smoothtop range in its size class. It also offers two distinct self-cleaning methods, which gives owners flexibility depending on how dirty the oven is.

The first method is called Steam Clean. It is a less intense, quick-cleaning process that takes only about 30 minutes. Steam Clean is ideal for light spills and everyday messes that have not had time to bake onto the oven walls. The second method is Self Clean, a more thorough high-heat cleaning cycle. With Self Clean, users can choose between cycles lasting two, three, or four hours, depending on the level of buildup.

That combination of a fast steam option and a customizable pyrolytic cycle helps explain why the GCFE3060BF scored so highly. It gives homeowners a way to handle small messes quickly while still offering a deep clean when needed.

Other Frigidaire Standouts

The other Frigidaire ranges that earned high self-cleaning scores do not have the same dual cleaning options. Instead, they simply offer a three-hour self-cleaning cycle. Even without steam cleaning or adjustable cycle lengths, those models performed well enough to earn top marks. The results suggest that Frigidaire has engineered its oven cavities and cleaning cycles to be effective across a range of price points and feature sets.

For shoppers who want a reliable self-cleaning electric range without paying for extra features, those simpler Frigidaire models may be particularly appealing. They prove that a straightforward three-hour cycle can still deliver strong results when the underlying design is sound.

LG

LG is best known for televisions, smartphones, and other consumer electronics, but the company also has a strong presence in home appliances. It often ranks among the most reliable appliance brands on the market, and its electric ranges have earned attention for both performance and innovation.

In self-cleaning tests, several LG electric ranges scored about as well as possible. LG is the only brand to produce a smoothtop range with double ovens that earned top marks for self-cleaning ability. That distinction went to the 7.3 cubic-foot LG LTEL7337F electric range. In addition to its excellent self-cleaning score, the LTEL7337F ranks overall as the best smoothtop double-oven range tested by independent evaluators.

LG also earned a tremendous self-cleaning score for the 6.3 cubic-foot LSEL6331F model. This is a smoothtop range with a single oven, and it ranks third overall among single-oven smoothtop ranges in the same testing program.

LG LTEL7337F

The LG LTEL7337F stands out not only for its self-cleaning performance but also for its size and flexibility. With 7.3 cubic feet of total oven capacity across two ovens, it can handle large meals and multiple dishes at once. The double-oven design is useful for households that frequently cook or bake, and the top self-cleaning score adds another layer of convenience.

Like other high-scoring LG ranges, the LTEL7337F promotes a feature called EasyClean. This is a quick 20-minute cleaning process, but it does require some manual preparation. Users must chip off burnt debris with a scraper and use a spray bottle of water to completely cover the inside of the oven before running the cycle. EasyClean is best suited for light soil and routine maintenance rather than heavy, baked-on messes.

For deeper cleaning, the range also offers a separate self-cleaning option. Users can select a three-, four-, or five-hour cycle depending on how soiled the oven interior is. The range also allows users to set a delayed start time, so the self-cleaning cycle can begin when they are away from the kitchen. That feature is helpful because high-heat cleaning cycles can produce odors and heat, and it is often preferable to run them when the home is well ventilated or empty.

LG LSEL6331F

The LG LSEL6331F is a single-oven smoothtop range with 6.3 cubic feet of capacity. It earned a very high self-cleaning score and placed third overall among comparable single-oven smoothtop ranges. For shoppers who do not need a double oven but still want strong cleaning performance, the LSEL6331F offers a compelling combination of capacity, features, and cleaning power.

Its EasyClean and longer self-cleaning cycles mirror the approach used on the LTEL7337F. The main difference is the single-oven configuration, which may suit smaller kitchens or households that do not need to cook multiple dishes at different temperatures at the same time.

Samsung

Samsung, like LG, operates in countless technology and appliance markets, including kitchen appliances. Among its electric ranges, five models tested highly for self-cleaning functions. That makes Samsung one of the most consistent performers in the category.

In fact, the 6.3 cubic-foot Samsung NSI6DG9100SR range is one of only two electric induction ranges tested to earn top scores for self-cleaning. Induction cooking is known for fast heating and precise temperature control, and the NSI6DG9100SR adds a top-tier self-cleaning system to those benefits.

On the smoothtop side, Samsung also had four single-oven models achieve high self-cleaning scores. They are the NE63A6511SS, the NE63A6751SS, the NSE6DG8100SR, and the NE63A6311SS. All four offer 6.3 cubic feet of oven capacity. That consistent capacity across models suggests Samsung has built its self-cleaning performance around a proven oven platform.

Samsung NSI6DG9100SR

The Samsung NSI6DG9100SR is an induction range with a 6.3 cubic-foot oven. It earned one of the highest self-cleaning scores among induction ranges in testing. For buyers who want the speed and precision of induction cooking along with a self-cleaning oven, this model is a standout choice.

Samsung Smoothtop Models

The four high-scoring Samsung smoothtop models, the NE63A6511SS, NE63A6751SS, NSE6DG8100SR, and NE63A6311SS, share a similar self-cleaning approach. Like the best-tested Frigidaire electric ranges, these Samsung models have two different self-cleaning modes.

The first is Steam Clean. To use it, owners pour about 10 ounces of non-distilled water into the Steam Clean tray at the bottom of the oven before starting the cycle. The process takes about 20 minutes. If there is particularly heavy debris on the oven sides, Samsung recommends rubbing detergent into it to help break it up before running the cycle.

The second mode is a more standard, intensive self-cleaning cycle. Users can choose a cleaning cycle that lasts two, three, or five hours, depending on their needs. Three hours is the default amount of time. To cycle through the different lengths, users simply press the Self Clean button on the range.

These Samsung ranges are also smart appliances that can be controlled with a Galaxy phone. However, turning on or adjusting the range's self-cleaning modes is not an available function remotely. That means owners still need to be at the appliance to start a self-cleaning cycle, even though other smart features may be accessible from a phone.
